When we signed our contract to sponsor the Ag2r-La Mondiale team, we gained an important partner in our quest to design the best UCI-approved time trial bike on the market. We were obsessed with making the bike not just inconspicuous to the wind, but also ultra-adjustable; after all, maximum speed is only possible with optimal position.
We knew the drag numbers we needed to achieve, but a shape is only the beginning. We began with our Twin Vane Evo Downtube. Once we had modeled a shape in CFD that we believed to be fast, we produced a prototype for the wind tunnel to confirm our computer simulations and quickly moved to rideable samples for the team to test.
The biggest challenge in producing a time trial/triathlon bike isn’t making it aero, it’s making the thing handle well. Thanks to the Twin Vane Evo design combined with the widest-possible bottom bracket—BBRight—we were able to make sure that the Slick was stiff enough to handle the forces generated by a top level pro when putting out maximum wattage. We increased the size of the chainstays to better handle the pedaling loads and created our Wide Stance Seatstays to improve rear-end stiffness while also allowing the wind to move more smoothly over the back of the bike.
The Slick isn’t just a TT bike you can sprint on, it’s stiff enough that it handles like a great road bike on any terrain. That extra stiffness gives riders greater confidence in turns and on descents. This was proven to us when Ag2R-La Mondiale riders reported to us that they’d gone 60 mph in a full tuck while on a descent.
There’s no reason a time trial bike shouldn’t handle well. With greater confidence, you’ll go faster.

We offer our bikes in three possible configurations, and we do this for a very specific set of reasons. Naturally, we offer complete bikes, but you’ll notice that we offer them with only two groups. We offer Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 and SRAM Red eTap for our bikes because after riding all the groups and examining performance, pricing and availability, we concluded that Dura-Ace Di2 and Red eTap offer the very best outcome for our bikes.
We also offer our models as a Chassis. Our Chassis is frame, fork, headset, bottom bracket, bar, stem and seatpost. We do this rather than offer just a frame and fork because we have engineered our chassis to work together as a system. When we talk about balance, we’re talking about our obsessive attention to ride quality. Anyone can make a stiff bike or a light bike. We have created a bike that is light, stiff and rides unlike anything else you’ve encountered. That feel depends on using a bar, stem and seatpost designed specifically for that bike.
Finally, we offer a Rolling Chassis. The Rolling Chassis adds wheels to our Chassis of frame, headset, bottom bracket, fork, bar, stem and seatpost. We have engineered our Black Ink (Inc) wheels to be the best possible wheel to work with our bikes. There may be faster wheels in the wind tunnel, but aerodynamics is more than a wheel on its own. A bike is a system and what wheel and tire you choose can change a bike’s aerodynamics significantly. Our frames perform better when paired with our Black Ink (Inc) wheels, and similarly, our Black Ink (Inc) wheels perform best when paired with our frames.
